Recommendations by Supreme Court Collegium

The Collegium led by Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India and the seniormost Judges of the Court had a busy year in making recommendations for appointments of Judges for Supreme Court and the High Courts of country (including Chief Justices for various High Courts). In 2023, the Collegium made over 220+ recommendations for appointments and transfer. These recommendations include 14 proposals for appointment of Supreme Court Judges in February, May, July and November, all of which were accepted by the Ministry of Law and Justice.1

In Memorium

In all the hubbub of appointments, retirements and other things, the Supreme Court also faced the sorrowful news of demise of Justice M. Fathima Beevi, who did the unthinkable in the late 1980s and broke the proverbial glass ceiling to become the First Woman Judge of the Supreme Court of India. She passed away on 23-11-2023 at the age of 96.

Late Justice M. Fathima Beevi’s entry into the higher echelons of Indian judiciary opened the gates for women all across India and Asia to dream big and achieve the greatest heights of success.

Anticipating 2024

As of now, the judicial strength of the Supreme Court stands at 33 sitting Judges. As the Court prepares to usher in the new year, it does not need a reminder that there are challenges ahead.

2024 will see 4 Judges retiring- Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India, Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli.

2023 did not see any new woman Judge in Supreme Court and with Justice Kohli retiring next year, the number of sitting woman Judges will drop dwon from 3 to 2.

The present Chief Justice also retires in November 2024. With Dr Justice D.Y Chandrachud retiring, Justice Sanjiv Khanna is likely to succeed him as the 51st Chief Justice of India as per the seniority rule2.

Given that representation of women in judiciary has been a point of worry for the Supreme Collegium, here’s hoping 2024 sees more women Judges making it to the Higest Court of the nation.
