About the Session

The recent trends in India’s sports world are oriented towards the interaction of sports with law — from Vinesh Phogat’s Olympics disqualification to the ban of AIFF, sports today cannot be separated from law. All sports enthusiasts will be curious to understand the legality of several sports-related matters, including the recent Sports Governance Act of 2025. This session offers an opportunity for participants to gain first-hand insights on how sports work in practice. The webinar with Mr Mehra will be an illuminating session that will give the participants interesting insights into the recent happenings in Indian sports. The unique perspective of India’s leading sports lawyer with over 25 years of experience is guaranteed to be an eye-opener into the arena of Sports Litigation.

Guest Speaker Profile

Sr. Adv. Rahul Mehra is one of the most prominent sports lawyers in the country with over 25 years of experience. He is also a renowned sports activist and has been engaged in several sports reform measures in India. Mr Mehra has been the counsel in several high-profile matters, including the writ petition filed by Vinesh Phogat and others challenging the elections of the Wrestling Federation of India and praying for its derecognition as an NSF for their non-compliance with the Sports Code and various court orders.

Mr. Mehra has been the leading figure behind the Public Interest Litigations filed before the Hon’ble Delhi High Court in 2000, 2010 & 2020 against the governance structure of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (‘BCCI’), Indian Olympic Association (‘IOA’) and various National Sports Federations (‘NSFs’) including but not limited to AIFF, NRAI, etc. The petitions demanded transparency, accountability, and better governance, leading to significant court interventions, directives against defaulting bodies, and a push for cleaner sports administration, with the courts stepping in to enforce rules on eligibility and funding. Over the years, he has championed reforms in all sports governing structures and flagged their non-compliance with the National Sports Development Code of 2011 (‘Sports Code’). Mr Mehra was the Respondent-in-Person in the Landmark Judgement passed recently on 19.09.2025 in the case titled All India Football Federation v. Rahul Mehra & Ors. He has also engaged in discussions concerning the National Sports Governance Act, 2025 and critiqued the government’s attempts at restoring enduring tenures and political control in sporting bodies.
