National Human Rights Commission: On 1-9-2026, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India took suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 16-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to gang rape by a bus driver and conductor after she boarded a bus from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh on 4-8-2026.
Reportedly, the perpetrators extended life threats to the minor girl and left her at the Kashmere Gate Bus Terminal in Delhi.
As per the media report carried on 31-8-2026, the girl had left her home in Mainpuri to visit her cousin in section 63, Noida. However, she reportedly missed her stop and got off at Pari Chowk. From there, she allegedly boarded another bus after confirming that it was going to Sector 63 of Noida.
NHRC observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raised serious issues of human rights violations. Accordingly, the Commission issued notices to the Police Commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar and the Mainpuri Superintendent of Police, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks, which is expected to include the status of the investigation and compensation, if any, paid to the victim.
