The Government of Tamil Nadu has appointed five new Advocates-on-Record (AoRs) to represent the State before the Supreme Court of India following the resignation of the previous panel of government AoRs.
The appointments come after the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu recommended a fresh panel to ensure continued representation of the State in matters before the Supreme Court. The Government accepted the recommendation and appointed Rupali Francesca Samuel, B. Karunakaran, Vrinda Bhandari, Jayasree Narasimhan, and Kanika Kalaiyarasan as Tamil Nadu Government Advocates-on-Record before the Supreme Court.
The newly appointed AoRs will represent the State of Tamil Nadu in proceedings before the Supreme Court and will be entitled to fees in accordance with existing government orders, along with a monthly retainer fee.
The notification also places certain restrictions on the appointees. They are prohibited from appearing against the State of Tamil Nadu without prior government permission, defending accused persons in criminal cases of the State, or advising private parties in matters in which they are likely to appear on behalf of the Government.
The appointments follow the acceptance of the resignations of the earlier panel comprising Sabarish Subramanian, Misha Rohatgi, G. Indira, Purnima Krishna, and T. Harish Kumar.
