The two-day National Annual Stakeholders Consultation on Ten Years of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, concluded at the Supreme Court of India, with calls for measurable accountability, prevention, de-institutionalisation, and stronger child protection systems.
“The J.J. Act, 2000 is based on our belief that children are the future of the society and in case they go into conflict with law under some circumstances, they should be reformed and rehabilitated and not punished. No society can afford to punish its children”.
The Court called for a mechanism to be devised in juvenile justice system by expungement of records for minor offenses committed by youth so as enable their easier rehabilitation and also prevent youthful mistakes from becoming lifelong barriers to personal and professional growth.
