Know Your Vehicle discontinued

On 1-1-2026, the National Highways Authority of India (‘NHAI’) announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle (‘KYV’) requirement for all newly issued FASTags in the car/jeep/van category. This step is aimed at enhancing public convenience, reducing delays, and making highway travel smoother for millions of commuters across India.

This initiative will be effective from 1-2-2026

Key Takeaways:

  1. Earlier, KYV verification was mandatory even after FASTag activation, often causing delays despite valid documents.

  2. KYV will now be enforced only if complaints are received regarding:

    • loose FASTags,

    • incorrect issuance, or

    • misuse.

  3. For FASTags already issued for cars, the KYV process will no longer be compulsory.

  4. This reform removes the burden of mandatory KYV checks after activation, saving time and reducing inconvenience for millions of highway users.

  5. In the absence of complaints, existing FASTag holders can continue without undergoing KYV verification.

  6. To maintain compliance and reliability while easing procedures for the public, NHAI has introduced stricter rules:

    • Mandatory Vehicle-Based Verification: FASTags will be activated only after vehicle details are verified through the VAHAN database.

    • No Post-Activation Validation: The earlier provision allowing verification after activation has been discontinued.

    • RC-Based Verification in Exceptional Cases: If VAHAN data is unavailable, banks must verify details using the Registration Certificate (‘RC’) before activation, with full accountability.

    • Online FASTags Included: FASTags purchased online will also undergo complete verification before activation.

  7. These measures guarantee upfront verification, eliminating the need for repeated customer follow-ups once FASTag is activated.
