Supreme Court Collegium Recommendations in May 2024

Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Permanent Judges and extension of term of an Additional Judge

On 17-05-2024, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai resolved to recommend the appointment of 2 Additional Judges of Gauhati High Court as Permanent Judges and extension of term of Additional Judge of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court began this month with a reduced strength of 33 Judges as against 34 Judges due to the retirement of Justice Aniruddha Bose in April 2024. However, in May 2024, the number of Judges in the Supreme Court dwindled further to 32 as Justice A.S. Bopanna retired on 18-05-2024 right before the commencement of summer vacations from 20-05-2024.

Immensely respected within the legal fraternity for ensuring transparency, Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna began his legal journey in 1984 and step by step rose up the ladder to eventually ascend to the topmost Court of India.

In his 5-year tenure as a Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Bopanna had been a part of several landmark judgments such as Immunity of MPs and MLAs; extent of Freedom of Speech by politicians; Demonetization judgment and the historic verdict on Right to Safe Abortion, to name a few.

Appointment of High Court Judges

Acting Chief Justice for Madhya Pradesh High Court

Justice Sheel Nagu, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, appointed as Acting Chief Justice with effect from 25-05-2024 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath, Chief Justice, Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Acting Chief Justice for Madras High Court

Justice R. Mahadevan, Judge of the Madras High Court, appointed as Acting Chief Justice with effect from 24-05-2024 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala, Chief Justice, Madras High Court.

Permanent and Additional Judges

  1. Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal, Additional Judge of High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, appointed as a Judge for a period of one year w.e.f. 03-06-2024.

  2. Justice Rakesh Mohan Pandey, Additional Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, appointed as Permanent Judge with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

  3. Justice Sachin Singh Rajput and Justice Radhakishan Agrawal, Additional Judges of High Court of Chhattisgarh, to be Additional Judges of High Court of Chhattisgarh for a period of one-year w.e.f. 16-05-2024 and 02-08-2024 respectively.

Transfer of Judges

  1. Justice Arvind Singh Chandel, Judge, Chhattisgarh High Court, transferred to be a Judge of the Panta High Court.

  2. Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao, Judge, Delhi High Court, transferred to be a Judge of the Karnataka High Court.

  3. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Judge, Delhi High Court, to be a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court
