Supreme Court: In an application filed by the Hindu worshippers seeking a directive to the Varanasi District Magistrate for cleaning a water tank that falls in the sealed area inside the mosque, due to dead fish in the tank, the Three-Judge Bench of Dr. DY Chandrachud , CJI., JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra , JJ. permitted the cleaning of Gyanvapi mosque’s water tank (wuzukhana), where a purported Shivling was discovered during a Court ordered survey.
The Gyanvapi mosque management committee supported the cleaning of the water tank, which has remained sealed on Court orders for nearly two years.
The Court directed that the cleaning of the water tank be carried out under the supervision of the district administration Varanasi, having regard to the previous orders of this court.
