The Supreme Court has held that an incorrect statement cannot automatically amount to a false statement attracting criminal prosecution. Emphasising the importance of intent, the Court observed that perjury-related proceedings should be invoked only where there is clear evidence of deliberate falsehood and where prosecution is necessary in the interests of justice.
