From 3.35% to 6.85%: Finance Ministry Raises Senior Citizens Welfare Fund Interest Rate for FY 2025—26

The Ministry of Finance has more than doubled the interest rate applicable to the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund from 3.35% to 6.85% for FY 2025—26. The revision, notified on 8 June 2026, directly strengthens the fund’s capacity to support healthcare, financial security and livelihood initiatives for the elderly.

Senior Citizens Welfare Fund interest rate 6.85%

On 8 June 2026, the Ministry of Finance announced the revised interest rate applicable to the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund (SCWF) for the financial year 2025—26.

Key Highlights:

  • As per the notification, deposits under the SCWF will earn interest at the rate of 6.85% per annum for the period 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026.

  • The Government has substantially increased the interest rate from 3.35% to 6.85% compared to the previous financial year.

  • The SCWF was established under the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Fund Rules, 2016.

  • The interest credited to the SCWF is crucial as it strengthens the fund’s capacity to support senior citizens and ensures the continuity and effectiveness of welfare initiatives through:

    ○ Enhancing the financial base of welfare programs for senior citizens

    ○ Ensuring sustainable funding for long-term social security initiatives

    ○ Supporting government schemes focused on healthcare, financial security, and livelihood assistance for the elderly
