The Legal Aid Centre, University School of Law and Legal Studies (USLLS), GGSIPU, is hosting Justice Spectrum: Rethinking Free Legal Aid in India on 4th November 2025. The event will feature a panel discussion, PIL drafting, quiz, and extempore competitions aimed at reforming India’s legal aid system and promoting access to justice.

About the Event

Justice Spectrum: Rethinking Free Legal Aid in India will be held on 4th November 2025 at Moot Court Hall, USLLS, GGSIPU (C-413), from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The event aims to address delays in free legal services and drive systemic reform in legal aid, bringing together students, experts, and practitioners for a day of discussion and competition. Highlights include:

  • Panel Discussion: Interactive discussion of systemic legal aid challenges and reforms

  • Online Quiz: Legal Aid Knowledge Challenge

  • PIL Drafting Competition: Written and oral advocacy regarding pressing environmental challenges.

  • Extempore Competition: Bilingual Public speaking on legal/social topics.

Guest of Honour

Sh. Shubham Devadiya is a judicial officer and legal professional with a strong academic background and a commitment to accessible justice. An alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and Kurukshetra University, he holds an LL.B. and LL.M., reflecting his deep engagement with legal scholarship. Since joining the Delhi Judicial Services in 2019, he has served across multiple courts handling civil and criminal matters, gaining wide-ranging experience in judicial processes. Currently serving as Secretary of the South West Delhi Legal Services Authority (since May 2025), he continues to advance legal aid initiatives and ensure equitable access to justice.

Panel Members-

  • Preeti Agarwala is a multilingual Judge (English, Hindi, Bengali, Spanish) with over 13 years of experience in judicial services, specializing in Criminal Law, Family Law, and Child Rights. Having served in esteemed positions including District & Additional Sessions Judge and Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, she combines rich courtroom experience with academic and social engagement. A former Assistant Professor of English Literature and documentary filmmaker, she continues to advocate for justice, child welfare, and human rights through her writing, teaching, and legal reform initiatives.

  • Sakshi Bhayana is a seasoned legal professional with nearly a decade of experience across Family Law, Cyber Law, and Civil, Criminal & Commercial Litigation. Holding an LL.M. in Cyber Laws, she has served as Legal Consultant to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and contributed to key policy initiatives like the Online Gaming Rules under the IT Rules, 2021. Currently practicing independently and empanelled with Delhi University, she also serves as an External Member on Internal Complaints Committees and a trainer for POSH, DEI, and workplace ethics programs. Beyond the courtroom, she is a media personality, corporate trainer, and academic mentor, blending legal acumen with communication and public engagement.

  • Prof. (Dr.) Ritu Gupta is a distinguished academician with over two decades of teaching and research experience, currently serving as Research Director at the Centre for Business and Financial Laws (CBFL), National Law University Delhi. Specializing in Commercial and Business Laws—including Contract, Banking, Property, and Competition Law—her work bridges legal education, judicial process, and gender justice. A prolific author and policy advisor, she has contributed extensively to workplace sexual harassment law and gender sensitization, serving as an external expert for ICCs across top government bodies and institutions. Recognized among BW Legal World’s “100 Influential Women Driving Change in Indian Legal Ecosystem,” she continues to shape discourse in law, policy, and social empowerment.

Event Components

Panel Discussion: Rethinking Free Legal Aid in India

Explores shortcomings in India’s legal aid ecosystem—backlogs, lack of coordination, outreach obstacles, and lawyer training. Distinguished experts, academics, and practitioners will debate solutions. Q&A by students included.

Online Quiz Competition: Legal Aid Knowledge Challenge

  • Eligibility: Individual or team, as per rules, Open to all students, studying 3-year or 5-year law courses.

  • Live, online via Kahoot or Google Forms; participants use their own devices.

  • Focuses on panel discussion content and general legal aid awareness

  • Prizes for top three (Merit Certificates, Gift Hampers), Participation Certificates for all.

PIL Drafting Competition

  • Eligibility: Teams of up to two students, Open to all students, studying 3-year or 5-year law courses.

  • Two phases: Online written submission, offline oral presentation for top 10 draft selected.

  • Draft a PIL on the problem provided (Problem)

  • Prizes: First place (Gift hamper ₹2,000, Trophy, Certificate of Excellence); second (Gift hamper ₹1,500, trophy and certificate of merit); third (Gift hamper ₹1,000, trophy and certificate of merit).

Extempore Competition: Voices for Justice

  • Eligibility: Individual participation only, Open to all individuals pursuing any course.

  • Topic revealed on the spot; 2 mins preparation, 2 mins speech

  • Individual, Bilingual language choice: Hindi/English.

  • Prizes as above (Gift hampers/trophies for top three, certificates for all).
