Maharashtra Lifts Escalators and Moving Walks Act

On 22 October 2026, the Government of Maharashtra notified 1 November 2026 as the commencement date of the Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks Act, 2017.

The notification has been issued under Section 1(3) of the Act.

The Act was enacted in 2018, but the legislation had not been operationalised until now. With this notification, the State Government has activated the statutory framework governing the installation, operation, maintenance and safety of lifts, escalators and moving walks.

The commencement of the Act is expected to strengthen regulatory oversight by introducing a formal legal framework for safety, inspection and compliance relating to elevators, escalators and moving walks in residential, commercial and public buildings across Maharashtra.
