Supreme Court Collegium modifies 3 earlier recommendations for appointment of High Court Chief Justices

Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, the seniormost puisne Judge of the Calcutta High Court has been newly recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.

Reconsidering its recommendations dated 11-07-2024 for appointment of Chief Justices of High Courts, Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr. DY Chandrachud, CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai, vide its recommendation/ resolution dated 17-07-2024 superseded three of its earlier recommendations.

Following are the changes in the recommendations:

  1. Justice Tashi Rabstan has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of his parent High Court- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, as Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.
  2. Justice Suresh Kumar Kait recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  3. Justice GS Sandhawalia to be appointed as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, on Justice Rajiv Shakdher’s retirement due on 18-10-2024. Justice Rajiv Shakdher was recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court vide Collegium’s resolution dated 11-07-2024.

The Collegium clarified that this new resolution will not affect the recommendations made on 11-07-2024, in respect of Justice Manmohan, Justice Rajiv Shakdher, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar and Justice KR Shriram.
