Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of 2 new Supreme Court Judges

The Collegium on 11-07-2024 gathered to recommend the names of Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.

Assembling after the summer vacations, the Supreme Court Collegium passed several resolutions on 09-07-2024 to recommend appointment of Judges for Bombay and Delhi High Courts.

Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Chief Justices for 7 High Courts

In a resolution passed on 11-07-2024, the Collegium recommended the appointments for Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Ladakh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Madras and Meghalaya High Courts.

Supreme Court Collegium recommends transfer of Justice M.S Ramachandra Rao, Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh HC to Jharkhand HC

The recommendation was made considering that a vacancy in the office of Chief Justice in the High Court of Jharkhand would arise on the retirement of Dr Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi on 19-07-2024.

Supreme Court Collegium recommends extension of term for 9 Additional Judges of Calcutta High Court

The Additional Judges’ names were recommended by the Collegium of Calcutta High Court unanimously for appointment as Permanent Judges on 29-4-2024. However, the Chief Minister and the Governor of West Bengal did not convey their views on the recommendation.

Supreme Court Collegium recommends the appointment of two Advocates as Judges of Chhattisgarh High Court

The Collegium on 30-07-2024 recommended the names of Bibhu Datta Guru and Amitendra Kishore Prasad, for appointment as Judges of Chhattisgarh High Court.

Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court Judges returned after the summer vacations, but with a reduced strength of 32 Judges. Therefore, the Collegium on 11-07-2024 gathered to recommend the names of Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.

Acting swiftly, the Ministry of Law and Justice days notified the appointment of the afore-stated Judges. Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan, took oath of office as new Judges of the Supreme Court of India on 18-07-2024 and with their induction, the Court now has achieved its sanctioned strength of 34 Judges once again.

Chief Justices

Jharkhand High Court

On 03-07-2024, the Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Judge, High Court of Orissa, as the 15th Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand.

Punjab and Haryana High Court

In exercise of the powers conferred by Art. 217(1) of the Constitution, the President appointed Justice Sheel Nagu, Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, as Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment on 04-07-2024.

Acting Chief Justices

Kerala High Court

On 03-07-2024, the Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Justice Muhamed Mustaque Ayumantakath, senior most Judge of Kerala High Court, as its Acting Chief Justice.

Madhya Pradesh High Court

President of India appointed Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent upon appointment of Justice Sheel Nagu, as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court

Justice Tashi Rabstan, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice consequent upon elevation of Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court.

Madras High Court

Justice D. Krishnakumar, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice consequent upon elevation of Justice R. Mahadevan, Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court.

Jharkhand High Court

Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court with effect from 20-07-2024 consequent upon retirement of Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi.

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand, to be a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court.
