Supreme Court: While hearing the bail application plea by former JNU student Umar Khalid, accused under Unlawful Acts (Prevention) Act, 1967 (‘UAPA’) over his alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the northeast Delhi riots of 2020 concerning the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC)., the division bench of Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, JJ. has adjourned the hearing to 24-01-2024.

Umar Khalid’s plea challenged the Delhi High Court order dated 18-10-2022, wherein the Court rejected his bail plea, stating that he was in constant touch with other co-accused and the allegations against him were prima facie true, and his actions qualifies as terrorist act under the UAPA.

The Bench deferred the case, after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal representing Umar Khalid sought adjournment, saying he was busy in a Constitution bench matter.

The Court while expressing displeasure, said that it was not inclined to defer the matter

The matter will next be taken up on 24-01-2023.
