Supreme Court Collegium recommendations appointment

In the first series of Resolutions for the year 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai, on 04-01-2024, recommended the names of various Additional Judges and Permanent Judges for the High Courts of Bombay, Calcutta, Chhattisgarh, Gauhati, Punjab and Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The recommended names which also include several Advocates and Judicial Officers, are as follows-

Bombay High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Abhay Ahuja, Additional Judge, for appointment as Permanent Judge of the High Court of Bombay.

Calcutta High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judge of the High Court at Calcutta. After enrolment at the Bar in 1993 Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), practiced at the High Court and City Civil Court for about 16 years and thus has extensive experience at the Bar and the Bench. Joining the judicial service in 2009, Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) has held various positions as judicial officer at sensitive postings in the State of West Bengal and is presently posted as Registrar General of the High Court at Calcutta.

Chhattisgarh High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Arvind Kumar Verma, Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh.

Gauhati High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the following names for appointment as Judges of the Gauhati High Court

  1. Shamima Jahan, Advocate and

  2. Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judicial Officer

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi and Justice Rahul Bharti, Additional Judges, for appointment as Permanent Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Punjab and Haryana High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Rohit Kapoor, Advocate, for appointment as Judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.

The Collegium further resolved to recommend that two Advocates namely, Harmeet Singh Grewal and Deepinder Singh Nalwa, whose names were approved on 17-10-2023, be given precedence in the matter of appointment over the instant recommendation. The inter se seniority of all the three Advocates be fixed as per the existing practice.
