On 31-10-2023, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna resolved to recommend the appointment of Justice Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury as Permanent Judge of Calcutta High Court. Justice Chowdhury who is currently serving as an Additional Judge of Calcutta High Court, is due to retire on 27-12-2023.
On 05-04-2023, the Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta made the afore-stated recommendation in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, with the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of West Bengal having concurred with the recommendation.
The above proposal was placed before the Supreme Court Collegium on 12-07-2023. However, on an overall consideration of the proposal, the Collegium deferred consideration of the proposal.
Having then scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record and considered all the aspects of the proposal, the Collegium on 31-10-2023 resolved to recommend the appointment of Justice Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury as Permanent Judge of Calcutta High Court.
