On 2-6-2023, the Delhi High Court issued a circular revising the Dress Code of Judicial Officers and Advocates.

Key Points:

Rule 30 of “Canons of Judicial Ethics”, High Court Rules & Orders (Vol. IV) relating to “Dress of Judicial Officers and Advocates” has been substituted.

  1. Dress of Male Judicial Officers: white shirt, white band, black coat and grey or white trousers.

  2. Dress of Female Judicial Officers:

    Earlier, only white sari with black blouse or white shirt with white salwar, and black coat were allowed.

    Now, the following are also allowed:

    • Blouse/ Shirt- White/ black, full/ half sleeved

    • Sarees- white/ black/ combination

    • Pants/ Salwar/ Churidar/ Long Skirt- white/ black/ grey

    • White Collar- stiff/ soft

    • White Band

    • Black Coat- Full sleeved

  3. Dress of Advocates:

The dress of advocates has to be as specified in the Bar Council of India Rules:

  • A black buttoned up coat, chapkan, achkan, black sherwani and white bands with Advocates’ Gowns.

  • A black open breast coat. white shirt, white collar, stiff or soft, and white bands with Advocates’ Gowns.

  • In either case wear long trousers (white, black striped or grey) Dhoti excluding jeans.

  • Black tie can be worn instead of bands: In Supreme Court, High Courts, District Courts, Sessions Courts or City Civil Courts.

Earlier, Rule 30 provided different kinds of dress codes for subordinate judges, magistrates, district and sessions judges, and lady judicial officers.
