ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Adv. M. Ratna Singh Memorial National Moot Court Competition is the flagship national moot court competition of Government Law College Kozhikode. The 2026 edition marks a significant milestone as the Tenth National Moot Court Competition organised by the Moot Court Society. Named in memory of Adv. M. Ratna Singh, former Advocate General of Kerala, distinguished criminal lawyer, and the first criminal law practitioner in Kerala to hold the office of Advocate General, the Competition seeks to honour his enduring legacy of professional excellence, integrity, scholarship, and public service.

The Competition aims to provide law students across the country with a rigorous platform to develop and demonstrate skills in legal research, memorial drafting, constitutional interpretation, and oral advocacy through simulated appellate proceedings.

ABOUT THE MOOT PROPOSITION

Drawing inspiration from the ideals of Indian democracy and constitutional governance, the proposition presents participants with a set of contemporary constitutional challenges concerning electoral financing, transparency in political funding, criminalisation of politics, voting rights of undertrial prisoners, and the constitutional role of Governors in government formation.Set in the fictional Republic of Zioni, the proposition requires participants to examine the constitutional validity of a political funding mechanism resembling electoral bonds, the disqualification of candidates upon framing of criminal charges, restrictions on prisoner voting rights, and disputes arising from post-poll coalition government formation. The issues invite competitors to engage with some of the most pressing constitutional questions confronting representative democracy today.

ELIGIBILITY

The Competition is open to all regular students enrolled in institutions imparting legal education leading to an undergraduate degree in law (Five-Year Integrated LL.B. or ThreeYear LL.B.) recognised by the Bar Council of India.
