New Chairman Faculty of Law AMU

Prof M. Zafar Mahfooz Nomani has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Law of Aligarh Muslim University for a period of three years with effect from 08.07.2025.

Prof. Nomani, a distinguished scholar specializing in Ecology Law and Intellectual Property Rights, has been engaged in teaching and research for the last 30 years. Over the course of his career, he has established himself as a leading voice in environmental legal studies. He successfully collaborated with the World Bank and the Ministry of Environment & Forests on the Capacity Building Project on Environmental Law in India during 1998—2003.

He has undertaken prestigious University Grants Commission Major Research Projects, including Review of Legal and Institutional Mechanism for the Protection of Wetland in India (2009—2011). He has also completed an Indian Council for Social Science Research Major Research Project titled Socio-Economic Impact of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the Land Owners and Local Inhabitants of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand States of India, whose recommendations have been reflected in the Land Acquisition and Compensation Law (2013—14), demonstrating the policy relevance of his research.

Currently, Prof. Nomani is working on an ICSSR Project on Role of International Biodiversity Law in Developing Access & Benefit Sharing Regime in India. As an accomplished academic, he has authored 14 books and published more than 213 research papers covering diverse areas of Environmental Law, Intellectual Property, and Corporate Laws. His appointment is expected to further enrich the Department’s academic and research endeavours.
