DAY I | INAUGURATION CEREMONY |AUDITORIUM HALL
10:30 AM: The event begins with the registration of the teams, marking the start of an exhilarating gathering. The Organizing Committee is greeting the participants with warmth, fostering a positive and encouraging atmosphere.
10:40 AM: The Inaugural Ceremony commenced with the auspicious lighting of the ceremonial lamp, graced by the presence of our esteemed Director Prof. (Dr.) Rose Varghese. She was joined by distinguished luminaries, Prof. (Dr.) N. L. Mitra, Prof. (Dr.) Kyvalya Garikapati , and Prof. (Dr.) Rajan Varghese, adding a profound sense of wisdom and reverence to the occasion.
10:45 AM: Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese approaches the podium to enlighten the young minds with her wisdom. she further highlights KIIT’s contributions to trial Advocacy and emphasizes on the competition’s legacy. She now ends her speech by stressing upon the importance of the skill of cross-examination in the legal fraternity.
11:00 AM: Prof. (Dr.) N. L. Mitra, Emeritus of KIIT Law School approaches the dais. He starts his speech by highlighting the history of mock and moot trials. He now puts the emphasis on details of mock trial cases and lastly he concludes by wishing them the best! May the best team win!!
11:15 AM: The event is now being officially inaugurated by Faculty Convenor Prof. (Dr.) Shyamantak Misra who ceremoniously marked the beginning by striking the gavel, signifying order and commencement.
11:20 AM: TAAS Member Vijaya and Anshuman lay down the importance of Trial and Advocacy and extend a warm thanks to the legal members, sponsors, judges, teachers and the participants. They move forward with wishing the team good luck.
11:22 AM: The inaugural ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks. After which the Faculty Coordinator expressed gratitude to all the distinguished guests, participants, and everyone present for their valuable contribution to the event. With sincere appreciation for their support, the inauguration ceremony officially comes to an end, marking the beginning of an exciting and enriching competition ahead.

11:30 AM: The 7th Mock Trial Competition at School of Law, KIIT deemed to be University, is in full swing as teams gather today for the crucial draw of lots, setting the stage for the intense rounds.
11:40 AM: The draw of lots have now come to an end and stage is set for the Memorial Exchange.
11:50 AM: The draw of lots for the witnesses has begun with teams selecting their witnesses, a process that will play a pivotal role in shaping their trial strategies.
12:10 PM: The TAAS team is all set to interact with the participants as they share their preparation and strategies for the upcoming Legal Battle.
RESEARCHER’S TEST | ROOM NO. 1
11:40 AM: The environment becomes tense as the researcher’s test begins in Room 1. Having only 45 minutes for 20 questions, they begin to embark on their journey for the nationals.
12:23 PM: Participants are in the final moments of the intense research test, racing against the clock.
12:30 PM: The intense researcher’s test has officially concluded, marking the first milestone of the 7th KIIT Mock Trial Competition, 2024. Participants have now begun to move to their respective hostels to recharge over lunch.
SCC ONLINE TRAINING SESSION | ROOM NO -1
After a well-deserved lunch break, participants will reconvene for the much-awaited SCC Online Training Session at 01:45 PM. This session promises to equip the budding legal minds with insights of SCC Online, a leading platform for legal resources.
1:45 AM: The teams have started to arrive for the SCC Online training session that will be held live.
1:50 PM: The session has started with Mr. Rajesh Raina ,Manager Learning Centre, SCC Online giving a brief introduction on SCC Online.
1:55 PM : The SCC Online Training Session is in full swing! The Mr. Raina is now presenting the SCC Online Dashboard, guiding participants through the platform’s key features. Starting with the registration and login process, the session has progressed to exploring the Red Tiles—the navigation tool for accessing various curated legal resources on the platform.
2:00 PM: The Training Session has now moved to an essential segment: a detailed briefing on Moot Court Resources. Participants are being introduced to specialized tools and databases tailored to aid in legal research for moot court competitions
2:05 PM: Mr. Raina is now sharing invaluable tips and tricks for efficiently navigating and utilizing SCC Online resources. A highlight of this segment is his detailed explanation of the process to identify whether a judgment has been overruled—a critical aspect for Moot Court Competitions.
He emphasizes the importance of the exclamation mark (!), a key indicator to watch for when verifying the status of a judgment. Additionally, he is briefing participants on the innovative steps taken by SCC Online to simplify and enhance the understanding of judgments, ensuring quick and accurate research.
2:15 PM : Mr. Raina is now delving into the much-coveted Boolean Search feature of SCC Online, a powerful tool that elevates legal research with its advanced technology.
He then introduces the Legal News feature on the SCC Online dashboard, which simplifies staying updated with the latest legal news and developments.
The session continues with an overview of the Search by Party Name feature, demonstrating how this tool enables quick access to case details by simply entering the names of the litigating parties.
2:20 PM : The session has now moved to the Word Search feature of SCC Online, with Mr. Raina demonstrating its functionality using an example of Article 132. This feature showcases the platform’s ability to deliver precise results, even for complex queries.
He further highlights the “Search Within Search” feature, located on the left-hand side of the dashboard, which allows users to refine their results further by adding specific filters. This dual-layered search capability enhances efficiency and accuracy, ensuring participants can pinpoint exactly what they need.
2:25 PM : Mr. Raina is now providing an in-depth overview of the Boolean Search feature. Using the example query: Compensation NOT (motor OR medical OR land) he demonstrates how Boolean operators like NOT and OR can help exclude irrelevant results and narrow down searches to the most relevant judgments and materials.
2:30 PM: Mr. Raina is now showcasing the Articles section within the My Library Tile, guiding participants on how to locate articles efficiently. Using the Constituent Assembly Debates list as an example, he demonstrates how users can delve into this rich repository to enhance their legal research.
He further introduces the Download feature, explaining how cases can be downloaded directly for offline reference. Additionally, he highlights the Common Folders feature, which allows users to organize and store important research materials for easy access.
2:40 PM: Wrapping up the session, Mr. Raina is now demonstrating the process of creating a case compilation for the Compendium of Cases—an essential skill for every mooter and legal researcher.
He explains how to efficiently download and merge case files into a folder, ensuring a streamlined approach to organizing and presenting case law. This feature simplifies the creation of well-structured compendiums, making it easier for participants to reference critical judgments during their arguments.

The second day of the 7th KIIT Mock Trial Competition 2024 unfolds with vibrant energy as participants, court officials, and judges gear up for another exciting round of legal challenges. Here’s a detailed account of the day’s proceedings:
Morning Briefings and Preparation
8:30 AM: The day begins with high spirits as participants and officials gather, ready for the rigorous legal battles ahead.
8:50 AM: The Organizing Committee (OC) conducts a comprehensive briefing session for court officials, ensuring clarity on roles and responsibilities for the smooth execution of the competition.
9:00 AM: Witnesses assemble in the designated briefing room while teams use the opportunity to strategize and brief their witnesses for the preliminary rounds.
Leadership Engagement
The day also witnesses active engagement from esteemed faculty and leadership:
Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, Director of KIIT School of Law, and Prof. Dr. Rajan Varghese, Director of Research and Innovation, observe proceedings in the courtrooms to evaluate and encourage participants’ performance.
Faculty Convenors Dr. Shyamantak Misra and Dr. Sonali Swetapadma, along with Faculty Administrative Head Dr. Hiranmaya Nanda, Faculty Research Head Ms. Shrabani Kar, and Official Records Head Mr. Sundar Athreya, play pivotal roles in overseeing the event. Preliminary Rounds Begin
10:40 AM: Judges are briefed by the founder of Legis Orbis, Mr. Abhishek Choudhury, Advocate Supreme Court of India, on the competition guidelines and move to their respective courtrooms, setting the stage for the day’s first preliminary rounds.
10:45 AM: The first round of arguments commences, with participants confidently presenting their cases and engaging in rigorous legal debates.

Courtroom 3: Judges grill the prosecution on procedural aspects under Section 4 of the CrPC, with the prosecution team confidently addressing the challenges. Additionally, the court witnesses the defendants’ objection regarding the relevance of evidence, which is promptly overruled based on procedural correctness.
Courtroom 2: Witness testimonies stand out, particularly an electrician who delivers his account with calm composure. The defense counsel’s skillful questioning and the prosecution’s strategic objections highlight the intense legal maneuvering in this courtroom.

Afternoon and Beyond
12:26 PM: With the conclusion of the first preliminary rounds, participants and officials pause for a well-earned lunch break. Judges provide valuable feedback and finalize their scores for the first round.
Post-Lunch: Teams reconvene for another round of witness briefings, where they refine their strategies in preparation for the second preliminary rounds.
Preliminary Round 2: Participants return to the courtrooms to continue their battle of wit, advocacy, and legal acumen under the keen observation of the judges.
2:15 PM – Participants gather and are ready to tackle Preliminary Round 2. It is difficult to predict which way the contest will tilt. Stay tuned!
2:44 PM | Courtroom 3 – Teams begin to arrive. Prosecution team TC-707 and defendant team TC-705 are present.
2:47 PM | Courtroom 3 – Judges and teams take their positions. Judges review the details and time divisions of the teams. There are no opening statements in this round.
2:44 PM | Courtroom 2 – The trial begins with witnesses being called immediately. The prosecutor summons Sigma Panigrahi to testify.
2:52 PM | Courtroom 3 – Judges review the memorandum from both parties while teams strategize their cases.
2:54 PM | Courtroom 3 – The prosecution starts by seeking permission to approach the dais. The judges forego opening statements and move directly to issues raised, exhibits (medical reports, FIR reports, and others), and related arguments.
2:55 PM | Courtroom 2 – The defense cross-examines Sigma Panigrahi. The defense counsel tries to make the witness comfortable, but she remains nervous. The judges excuse the question considering her age.
3:00 PM | Various Courtrooms
Courtroom 3: Prosecution calls the victim’s mother as the next witness.
Courtroom 2: The defense focuses on the timeline discrepancies, questioning Sigma’s whereabouts and suggesting alternative theories.
Courtroom 4: Heated exchanges take place between counsels as objections are raised during the cross-examination of witnesses.
3:30 PM – Judges provide feedback to teams, emphasizing the importance of advocacy skills, proper court mannerisms, and the need for thorough preparation.
Campus Tour and Exploration
4:57 PM – After the conclusion of Preliminary Round 2, participants and their team representatives embark on a campus tour. The tour highlights the vibrant and sprawling KIIT University Campus, including visits to KIIT School of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and the globally renowned Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). Mr.Shashank Nande, Faculty Hospitality Head of Trial Advocacy and Appellate Society of KIIT School of Law accompanied the delegates to KISS.
At KISS University, delegates are deeply impressed by the institution’s unique initiatives to empower underprivileged tribal students. They appreciate the state-of-the-art infrastructure, the holistic education approach, and the focus on cultural preservation and skill development. Delegates particularly admire KISS’s inclusive philosophy and its transformative impact on society.
Students were overwhelmed to visit the ‘India’s Mega Kitchen’ that was programmed by National Geographic channel as one of the prized possession of KISS University. It is the world’s largest tribal school that provides accommodation and study both along with healthcare and fooding to 30,000 tribal students on daily basis.
Semi-Final Announcements and Preparation
6:00 PM – The results of Preliminary Round 2 are announced. The teams advancing to the semi-finals receive their official notifications amidst cheers and applause.
6:30 PM – Teams retreat to their respective hostels to refine their strategies and prepare for the intense semi-final rounds scheduled for the next day.
The engagement of faculty leadership and the determination of participants set a remarkable standard for the event. As the competition progresses, the enthusiasm and competitive spirit remain palpable.

CR-1 | TC 704 (Prosecution) vs TC 707 (Defense)
10:23 AM| CR-01: Both the teams have arrived, and are now prepping the witnesses. The TAAS member announces that the teams now only have 5 minutes for preparing the witnesses.
10:51 AM| The judges have arrived. TC 704 (prosecution) v. TC 707 (defense) gets ready for the fight of the courts. The judges are familiarizing themselves with the court clerks, the teams and the memorials.
10:58 AM| The trial starts. The prosecution takes the dais and begins by calling the first witness of the day, Juhi Panigrahi.
11:01 AM| The defense takes the stand now and starts cross-questioning Juhi Panigrahi. The witness is having a nervous breakdown, the counsel gives her water to calm her down.
11:10 AM| The defense counsel grills the witness. The prosecution tries to help the witness, which the judges ask not to.
11:14 AM| The defense ends cross-examining and the prosecutor takes on the dais. The prosecutor calls Sigma Panigrahi to the witness box.
11:19 AM| The prosecutor leaves the dais and the defense counsel takes up the stand for cross-examining the victim

11:48 AM| The prosecution counsel argues with the judges because of the medical report as the doctor has not mentioned the specific cases and claims that those cannot be conducted in her clinic.
11:49 AM| The judges grill the counsel on the basis of Section 156 as he has not followed it.
11:50 AM| The defense now takes up the dais for the cross-examination.
11:58 AM| The prosecution excuses Dr. Shradha, and now calls the accused, Ashok Mohanty to the witness box.
12:03 PM| The prosecutor delves deeper into the questions. The defense objects. The witness is excused.
12:06 PM| The judges now ask both parties to start with the closing arguments. They grill the prosecution on Section 226 of the CrPC.

12:25 PM| The judges ask the counsel about Sec 41(a) of the CrPC. The judges are asking the speaker certain questions of which the counsel answers confidently.

3:11 PM| The judges begin the final round of the competition. The prosecution takes the stand and calls the victim, Sigma Panigrahi to the witness box.
3:16 PM| The victim agrees that the tea seller has done something wrong with her
3:18 PM| The defence takes up the dias for cross examination of the victim, Sigma Panigrahi.
3:18 PM| The prosecution objects but the judges overrule it.
3:21 PM| The prosecution takes up the stand and calls Juhi Panigrahi, the mother to the witness box for chief examination.
3:20 PM| The defence leaves the dias after the victims cross examination. She was asked about the windows and lighting of the room but she couldn’t remember anything.

3:25 PM| The prosecution makes the point that the victim’s statements corroborate with the mother’s statements.
3:25 PM| Final Court Room: The defence has now taken up the dias to cross-examine the victim’s mother, Juhi Panigrahi.
3:27 PM| The victims mother claims that Juhi das has given her the information about Ashok Mohanty.
3:29 PM | The prosecution makes an objection to the defense team for repeating the same questions to which the judges sustain the objection.
3:30 PM| The witness was asked about the tea sellers near her area. The defence leaves the dias after cross examining the witness. The prosecution take up the dias once again.
3:31 PM| The prosecution calls Juhi Das, the neighbor to the witness box for chief examination. The prosecution makes the point that Juhi Das saw the victim’s family returning and informed that she might have heard the daughter cry. After that, she went to the house to open the door. She concludes by hearing the noise that the girl could be the victim.
3:34 PM| The court clerk shows that the prosecution is left with 10 minutes
3:36 PM| Juhi Das makes an alibi that she was taking a stroll through that street when she met Juhi Panigrahi. Prosecution presses the witness to confirm this. Noe he defence takes up the dias to cross-examine the witness, Juhi Das.
3:37 PM| She claims to have onle heard the girl cry, she did not see anything. The defence takes their leave from the dias.
3:38 PM| The prosecution takes the stand again and calls, the investigating officer for examination in chief to the witness box. The defence takes up the dias to cross examine the IO, the witness.
3:40 PM| She claims to have not drawn the spot in the place of incident.
3:41 PM| The prosecution approaches the dais and calls Dr. Shradha, the medical examiner.
3:42 PM| Dr. Shradha makes the statement that rape can happen without signs of sexual assault, as the victim was a minor and also mentally disabled.

4:04 PM| The court clerk shows that there is only 5 minutes left for the defense to wrap up the argument.
4: 05 PM| The counsel mentions that the investigation was not done in the procedure as mentioned in the law.
4: 08 PM| The defense is submitting an exhibit to the judges which is vital for them to prove the argument.
4:09 PM| The defence states that the accused should be acquitted from the charges. The defense leaves the dais and the prosecution comes up.
4:10 PM| Further, the defence mentions Section 102 of Indian Evidence Act 1872 to state the burden of proof.
4:11 PM| The prosecution makes the point about the chain of evidence in this case. The flight of the accused and the towel are important pieces of evidence in this case.
4:12 PM| The statement of the mother “only one tea stall being there in the market place” is an important piece of information.
4:14 PM| The prosecutor concludes by saying that the offence of Section 376 and Section 4 of POCSO Act has been committed.
The trial is over and the judges are grading the participants.
