Client Counselling Competition

Greetings from the NUJS Alternative Dispute Resolution Society and the Outlawed OC!

It brings us immense pleasure to announce that the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, will be organising the 3rd edition of its flagship event, the NUJS National Client Counselling Competition, from 17th February to 18th February, 2024.

About Outlawed:

Outlawed, our flagship event, is east India’s largest cultural festival featuring diverse events in music, dance, drama, art, and culinary delights and serves as a platform for student talents and local businesses. This edition coincides with Invicta, the premier sports event renowned across law schools. Outlawed appeal extends beyond the student body and Invicta participants, attracting visitors seeking the festival’s grandeur. The fusion of sports and culture, evolving over the years with events like the Client Counselling competition, enhances the overall experience, solidifying Outlawed as a must-attend extravaganza.

Objective of the National Client Counselling Competition:

The National Client Counselling competition, in its initial two editions, significantly influenced the ADR field through a successful partnership with Khaitan & Co. The current edition of the NUJS Client Counselling Competition and Luthra & Luthra has been formulated in consultation with the Competition Commission of India. The aim of this competition is to instill greater knowledge and a spirit of enquiry into the preventive law and counselling functions of lawpractice in law students. Moreover, the competition encourages the development of interviewing, planning, and analytical skills essential for building and sustaining a strong lawyer-client relationship.

Eligibility:

Students of three-year and five-year law degree courses in any year from any University/ Law School/College/Department are eligible to apply for registration of their team. Cross teams, consisting of students from various law institutes, are welcome to participate. Additionally, a college has the opportunity to submit applications for multiple teams.

Format:

The competition is scheduled to take place offline, at the NUJS campus in Kolkata. Participants Teams of two/three, representing Counsels will offer legal guidance on a specified issue. The top four teams progress to the Semi-Finals, where winners move on to the Finals for a final showdown.

Participation Incentives:

Students participating in the Competition de-facto recipients of a three-day exclusive entry pass for NUJS’s biggest fest, Outlawed happening on same dates and to the Outlawed Starnite events worth Rs.1000/-. This year’s line-up includes Naalayak and Prabdeep.

Some of the events include Battle of the Bands, Rang De Stage, Irshaad, Street Funk and the Fashion Show. Over the last couple of years, it has staged performances like Indian Ocean, Agnee, Advaita, Local Train, Prateek Kuhad, Zaedan, Yellow Diary, the F16s, and Anuv Jain. Fee concessions can be considered on an individual basis for participants expressing interest in other events associated with Outlawed.

Registration:

  • One team shall comprise two- three participants only (Counsel 1 and Counsel 2).

  • A total of 16 teams will be selected for the competition on a review basis.

  • The registration fee for each team, amounting to Rs. 12,000, covers

    (a) accommodation for three days,

    (b) lunch meals during the competition,

    (c) access to the three days of NUJS Outlawed’ 24(includes access to Starnites for 3 days, Irshaad, Great Calcutta Race, Food Walk and general viewer entry for all events.).

Awards and Perks:

  • Internships will be granted to the winners, runners-up, the best client counsel team, and the highest-ranked team in the preliminary rounds. Details regarding cash prizes will be disclosed shortly.
