MoRTH revises the Requirements for Emission Standards of Bharat Stage VI Vehicles of all Categories vide CMV (First Amendment) Rules, 2024

On 5-1-2024, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways published the Central Motor Vehicles (First Amendment) Rules, 2024 to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The provisions came into effect on 5-1-2024.

Key Points:

  1. The table relating to “Application of Test Requirements for Type-Approval-BS VI” has been revised making the provisions more specific.

    Now, it related to “Emission Standards for Vehicles of Category M and N with gross weight not exceeding 3000Kg- Applicability of test requirements for Type-Approval AL-BS-VI”.

    • Test will be on the Chassis Dynamometer.

    • There will be no relaxation of norms for conformity of production (‘CoP’) purpose and procedure for compliance will be as per AIS-137.

    • Crankcase ventilation systems will not permit the emission of any of the crankcase gases into the atmosphere.

    • Evaporative emission should not be more than 2.0g/test from Gasoline fueled vehicles.

  2. The table relating to “Applicability of Test Requirements for BS-VI” has been revised which now specifies that this test will be specific to Emission Standards for vehicles of category M and N having gross weight exceeding 3500 Kg.

    • The test shall be done on an engine dynamometer.

    • In the case of vehicles equipped with positive ignition engines, the gaseous and particulate emissions will be measured as per the Worldwide Harmonized Test Cycle.
