The 7th Edition of the Policy Debate is being organized by the Government Law College, Mumbai, India, in association with Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. It will be held on the 4th of March, 2023 at the Government Law College Auditorium, Mumbai at 05:00 PM.

Organisers:

The Government Law College, founded in 1855, is Asia’s oldest law school, with an international and national reputation for excellence. GLC is the repository of erudition in the legal firmament and has had the privilege of guidance from eminent legal luminaries such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Lokmanya Tilak, Justice M.C. Chagla, Nani Palkhivala, and several others who have adorned benches of the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court. Students who have walked through GLC’s doors have also distinguished themselves at the Bar, the Judiciary, and Academia.

The Debating and Literary Society of Government Law College, colloquially known as ‘DebLitSoc,’ provides a forum for aspiring professionals to hone their oral argument abilities and exchange ideas, allowing them to evolve into socially aware and responsible citizens of the country. The Society promotes students to acquire critical thinking skills and to investigate previously undiscovered elements of regional, national, and worldwide issues. It organises debate practices, competitions and encourages discussion of contemporary issues through its’ newsletters- Nazariya and Discourse.

Details of the 7th Policy Debate 2023

The Theme for the 7th Policy Debate is “The Independence of the Judiciary: Collegium In Question?”. It represents the increase in discourse surrounding the topic and promises to be a engaging debate with eminent speakers. The Policy Debate has a legacy of leading to unique ideas which were also shaped by exigent questions from among the audience which consist of students across the city. The 7th Edition seems to be all set to maintain the same.

The event will see participation from distinguished speakers which will enrich the state of discourse around the issue of contemporary importance.

The Speakers to be present are

  • ➢ Mr. Sanjoy Ghose, Senior Counsel at the Delhi High Court;
  • ➢ Mr Alok Prasanna, Co-Founder and Lead, of Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy;
  • ➢ Mr Shekhar Naphade, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India;
  • ➢ Dr. Suresh Mane, Founder and National President of the Bahujan Republican Socialist Party
  • ➢ Mr Sanjay Hegde, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India.

Justice (Retd.) Sujata Manohar will grace the event as its Chief Guest. Her Ladyship was the first woman judge at the Bombay High Court and went on to also become the first woman Chief Justice of the Court. She was further also Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and a Judge at the Supreme Court of India

Eligibility
