ABOUT THE 1ST NATIONAL TRIAL ADVOCACY COMPETITION

The 1st National Trial Advocacy Competition is conceived as a rigorous, simulation-based educational platform that bridges the gap between theoretical legal studies and the realities of trial litigation.

The competition relies entirely on a meticulously drafted criminal law proposition. By simulating contemporary trial proceedings, the event is uniquely structured to test participating law students on two distinct fronts: their foundational knowledge of substantive and procedural law, and their practical capacity to apply this knowledge dynamically within a courtroom setting.

The evaluative criteria for the competition extend far beyond conventional appellate mooting. Participants will be rigorously assessed on their execution of trial-specific mechanisms, including the formulation of examination-in-chief, the strategic deployment of cross-examination, the timely raising of evidentiary objections, and the delivery of compelling legal arguments. The underlying theme and structural framework are designed to test the students’ overall courtroom strategy, strategic thinking, teamwork, persuasive advocacy, and adherence to courtroom professionalism. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND EXPECTED PARTICIPATION

The competition is exclusively open to students currently pursuing either a Three-Year LL.B. programme or a Five-Year Integrated LL.B. programme.

Reflecting the premier nature of the event, the organizing committee anticipates the participation of approximately 20 elite teams representing leading law institutions across the country. The convergence of these institutions highlights the competitive rigor and national prestige associated with the competition.

TEAM COMPOSITION

In alignment with the practical demands of a simulated trial environment, the team structure requires participants to step into specialized roles.

Each participating team must be composed of exactly four members. The strict division of labor within the team mandates that two members act as designated Speakers, while the remaining two members serve in the dual capacity of Researchers-cum-Witnesses. This specific composition introduces a layer of tactical complexity, as researchers are not merely confined to drafting memorials but must actively participate in the oral proceedings by assuming witness personas, thereby subjecting themselves to examination and cross-examination.
