Justice Rajiv Shakdher’s elevation was recommended by the Collegium on 11-7-2024 and his appointment was finally confirmed by the Law Ministry on 21-9-2024.
The Court was hearing a PIL seeking directions for the Union Government clear the Collegium recommendations. The Court is also due to hear a contempt petition filed by State of Jharkhand vis-a-vis delay in clearing the transfer of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, for appointment as next Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
The Collegium noted that Advocate Karia is a domain expert in the law of arbitration and has extensive experience in conducting arbitrations, both domestic and international.
The Collegium recommended Advocates Ajay Digpaul, Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, and Shwetasree Majumder, be appointed as Judges of the High Court of Delhi.
On 13-8-2024, the Collegium recommended 14 names for appointment as Judges in the High Courts of Allahabad, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
The Delhi High Court said that the directions sought were not only beyond but also contrary to the law laid down by the Supreme Court.
The Judges were appointed by the President of India in exercise of the power conferred by Article 217(1) and Article 224(1) of the Constitution respectively.
Recommendations were made regarding the appointment of 2 Additional Judges of Gauhati High Court as Permanent Judges and extension of term of Additional Judge of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
The Collegium on 16-04-2024, resolved to recommend the appointment of 3 Judges, which included 2 Permanent Judges and 1 Advocate as a Judge.
The Law Ministry notified appointment of Judges for 4 High Courts. Furthermore, 5 out of 7 Permanent Judges appointed on 30-01-2024 are women.
