On 16 August 2026, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the re-conduct of the UGC-NET June 2026 examination for English, Commerce and Sociology, following complaints regarding multiple errors in the question papers. A committee constituted by NTA identified several factual, typographical and translation errors, as well as repetition of previously administered questions.
Key Highlights
-
NTA will re-conduct the UGC-NET June 2026 papers for English, Commerce and Sociology.
-
NTA received several complaints regarding multiple errors in the three question papers and subsequently constituted a committee to examine the reported issues.
-
The committee identified several factual, typographical and translation errors, including misspelt names of prominent scholars, garbled book titles, errors in question wording, grammatical mistakes, gender and number agreement errors, punctuation mistakes and non-standard coined terms for established concepts.
-
The committee also identified the repetition of a significant number of questions that had been administered previously.
-
The committee recommended re-conducting the English, Commerce and Sociology papers in the interest of ensuring a fair and error-free examination, and NTA concluded that the defects could not be remedied merely by dropping questions after the challenge process.
-
The examinations will be conducted as per the following schedule:

-
Results for the remaining 84 subjects were declared on 16 August 2026.
-
The allocation of JRF seats and issuance of e-certificates for eligibility for Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes for these 84 subjects will not be delayed due to the re-conduct of the three affected papers.
-
The number of candidates qualifying for Assistant Professor eligibility will be equal to 6% of the candidates who appeared in the June 2026 test or the retest, whichever is higher.
-
For English, Commerce and Sociology, the subject-wise allocation for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission eligibility will be carried out in accordance with the UGC-NET Information Bulletin.
-
Following the retest, the numbers already allocated for each subject will not be reduced under any circumstances.
