20-year-old woman's gang rape

National Human Rights Commission: On 20-08-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (‘NHRC’) took suo motu cognizance of the gang rape of a 20-year-old woman in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, based on a news report.

As per the media report, the victim had gone out with her fiancé when she was allegedly raped by four persons, who also assaulted her partner. Reportedly, after managing to escape from the attackers, they reached the police station to register an FIR.

NHRC, in its press release, observed that if the news report was true, it raised serious issues of human rights violations. Therefore, it issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Madhya Pradesh, calling for a detailed report, including the status of the investigation and the health of the victim, within two weeks.
