Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Chief Justices for 5 High Courts

Collegium recommended appointment of Chief Justices for Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gauhati, Patna and Jharkhand High Courts.

On 26-5-2025, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI B.R. Gavai recommended the elevation of following Judges as Chief Justices of 5 High Courts:

  1. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Judge MP High Court, to be appointed as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court

  2. Justice Vibhu Bakhru, Judge Delhi High Court, to be appointed as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court

  3. Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Judge Patna High Court, to be appointed as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

  4. Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi, Judge Patna High Court, to be Chief Justice of Patna High Court

  5. Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Judge Himachal Pradesh High Court, to be appointed as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court (vacancy likely to arise consequent upon transfer of the incumbent Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao)

The Collegium on 26-5-2025, had recommended the appointment of Justice N.V Anjaria, current Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court and Justice Vijay Bishnoi, current Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, as Judges of Supreme Court. If their appointments are confirmed, vacancies to the post of Chief Justice for Karnataka and Gauhati High Courts will arise.

The post of Chief Justice of Patna High Court fell vacant as Justice K. Vinod Chandran was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2025. At present, Justice Ashutosh Kumar is currently the Acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court.

Similarly, the post of Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court fell vacant after Justice Suresh Kumar Kait retired on 23-5-2025. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva is currently the Acting Chief Justice of MP High Court.
