Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of 3 Judges to the Supreme Court

In his first meeting as head of the Collegium, CJI B.R. Gavai recommended the elevation of 2 High Court Chief Justices and 1 High Court Judge to the Supreme Court.

On 26-5-2025, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI, B.R. Gavai, recommended the appointment of following 3 Judges to the Supreme Court of India:

  • Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, (Parent High Court: High Court of Gujarat)

  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court, (Parent High Court: Rajasthan High Court)

  • Justice A.S. Chandurkar, Judge, Bombay High Court

Currently, the judicial strength of the Supreme Court stands at 30 Judges1 after the retirement of former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Bela M. Trivedi and Justice Abhay S. Oka. If the recommendations are confirmed, then the Judges’ strength would rise to 33 Judges, just 1 short of sanctioned strength of 34 Judges.
