The National Law University Delhi Pro-Bono Club invites applications from students studying law from any law school for an online, ‘Advanced Course on skills for Practicing Law' from 6th to 10th February 2023. The course is designed to offer an advanced inquiry into law practice skills, on themes which are scarcely included in regular curriculum and teaching – learning process. The course offers a practical understanding of the following tentative aspects:

1) Client Interviewing

2) Legal Problem Solving

3) Legal Research

4) Legal Writing

5) Persuasive Presentation.

The course will equip participants with a practical understanding of the above-stated skills for practising law and enable them to enrich their advocacy skills.

About the Pro-Bono Club

The NLUD Pro-Bono Club is constituted to strengthen the Nyaya Bandhu (Pro Bono Legal Services) program which is an initiative under the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice. The Nyaya Bandhu (Pro Bono Legal Services) program is the Government of India's primary initiative to establish a framework for the dispensation of pro bono legal services across the country. The scheme has been conceptualized to strengthen the existing pro bono programme, by integrating law schools and students within its fold. The primary objective of this scheme is to improve the efficiency and quality of pro bono legal services by providing assistance to pro bono advocates through competent law students.

Course Details

The online course is of 5 days (06 Feb — 10 Feb 2023), with a total of 5 sessions, approximately 2 hours each day from 3 to 5 pm. As per the thematic agenda, sessions will be held as lectures, group exercises and activities, as well as discussions. Participants will be given ample opportunity to engage and interact with course instructors and their fellow participants, to enable an environment of collaborative learning. Students studying law from any law school can apply for this course.

Course Instructors

The Course Instructors for the program will be Prof Margaret Philips and Dr Bharati Yadav.

Prof Margaret Philip is the Director of Paralegal Studies at Daemen University, New York and a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar. Serving as a director since the program was established in 2011, Phillips has grown the program's offerings to include a bachelor's degree, a 21-credit undergraduate certificate for Daemen students, and a 21-credit post-baccalaureate certificate for those who already hold a four-year degree. She has also developed a service-learning course at Daemen that gives paralegal students the opportunity to work on refugee, family law, and housing issues. Phillips recently published a textbook on legal skills and has written articles on trends in undergraduate legal education and the legal profession in the Buffalo Law Journal, Business First, and the Paralegal Educator.

Dr Bharati Yadav is an Assistant Professor of Law at the National Law University Delhi. Her areas of interest and specialisation are Criminal Law, Research Methodology, Legal Aid and Clinical Legal Education. She has organised many international and national workshops and conferences on criminal law and clinical legal education at National Law University Delhi. She has also presented papers on various aspects of criminal law and access to justice at national and international conferences. Her research papers are published in many journals and books. She has also supervised a number of LL.M. students for their dissertations. She has been involved in prison administrative reform initiatives by conducting various empirical research. She has collaborated with Delhi Legal Services Authorities in various Legal Aid initiatives. She has been a resource person at the Haryana Institute of Public Administration in various training programs for HCS officers and law officers of Haryana. She has also been a resource person in many workshops and training programs organised by NLUD.

Registration Details

The course fee is Rs 5,000. All participants will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion of the course

Interested candidates are required to fill out this form with all the requisite details and complete the payment process to register for the course. The last date to apply for the course is 1 Feb 2023 (23:59 PM IST). Applications received after this date and time will not be accepted. Due to the limited number of seats and admission on a first-come-first-serve basis, interested participants are requested to register at the earliest.
