On 13 October 2026, the Bar Council of Delhi wrote to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), emphasising the need to protect the dignity of the judiciary and preserve public confidence in the justice delivery system. In its letter dated 13 October 2026, the Council condemned unsubstantiated personal attacks on Judges and cautions against the levelling and circulation of uncorroborated and sensational allegations, particularly across public and digital platforms on the Courts.

Describing the judiciary as “an indispensable pillar of our constitutional democracy,” the Council stated that the rule of law can survive and flourish only when the nation has an independent and effective judicial system. It was stated that uncorroborated and sensational allegations made without concrete evidence can create unjustified prejudice, hinder the regular functioning of the justice delivery system and lower the dignity of courts in the eyes of the public.

Distinguishing legitimate criticism from personal attacks, the Council acknowledged that “constructive criticism of judicial decisions is a recognized hallmark of a democratic society.” However, it maintained that unsubstantiated personal attacks cannot be tolerated and are condemnable.

The Council urged members of the Bar and responsible citizens to exercise restraint, uphold the majesty of the law and desist from amplifying unsubstantiated narratives that erode institutional integrity.

The letter was signed by Nitin Ahlawat, Chairman; B.S. Jakhar, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Ramit Sehrawat, Honorary Secretary of the Bar Council of Delhi.
