India’s Anti-Doping Law Is Finally Operational: National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 Comes into Force on 15 July 2026; Amendment Act Follows the Next Day

Central Government has brought the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 into force from 15 July 2026 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025 into force from 16 July 2026, strengthening India’s anti-doping regulatory and enforcement framework in sports.

National Anti-Doping Act 2022 comes into force

On 15 July 2026, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports notified 15 July 2026 as the date on which the provisions of the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 came into force.

Subsequently, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025 was brought into force on 16 July 2026.

Key Highlights:

  1. With effect from 15 July 2026, India has operationalised the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, bringing anti-doping testing, investigations, enforcement and appeals under a dedicated legal framework.

  2. The Act prohibits doping in sports and applies to athletes, athlete support personnel and other persons involved in sporting activities.

  3. The Act gives statutory recognition to specified provisions of the World Anti-Doping Code, which now have the force of law in India.

  4. The Act establishes a National Board for Anti-Doping in Sports to oversee India’s anti-doping framework and monitor compliance with international anti-doping obligations.

  5. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) now functions as a statutory body with responsibility for implementing anti-doping rules, testing, investigations, result management and anti-doping education.

  6. Athletes are responsible for ensuring that prohibited substances or methods do not enter their bodies and for complying with anti-doping rules.

  7. Anti-Doping Rule Violations include:

    • Presence or use of prohibited substances;

    • Refusal or failure to provide samples;

    • Tampering with doping control procedures;

    • Possession or trafficking of prohibited substances;

    • Prohibited association; and

    • Retaliation against whistleblowers.

  8. Athletes requiring prohibited substances or methods for genuine medical conditions may apply to NADA for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

  9. Consequences of Anti-Doping Rule Violations may include disqualification of results, forfeiture of medals, points and prizes, suspension from competition, financial sanctions and public disclosure of violations.

  10. The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025 came into force on 16 July 2026, introducing changes relating to Anti-Doping Rule Violations, appeals, operational independence of NADA and alignment with the World Anti-Doping Code.
