National Human Rights Commission: On 18-07-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (‘NHRC’), took suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the alleged suicide of a man on 11-07-2025. The report indicates that the suicide occurred after the victim was subjected to alleged physical torture by police at Dwarka North Police Station, Delhi.
According to the media report, the victim, a contract employee with IP University and a resident of Nangli Vihar, Delhi, was taken into police custody on 10-07-2025, for questioning in connection with a theft complaint made against by a woman supervisor. A suicide note was also recovered.
The NHRC observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the human rights of the victim. Consequently, it issued a notice to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
The media report, carried on 12-07-2025, further stated that the victim had visible injury marks on his body and had reportedly been given electric shocks, resulting in swelling in his ear. His family members reportedly took him to a hospital, from where he was referred to Indira Gandhi Hospital for further treatment. The next day, the victim was found hanging in his room.
