National Human Rights Commission: On 05-06-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (‘NHRC’) took suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the death of a 35-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, allegedly due to physical torture by police personnel at Rajendranagar Police Station in Hyderabad, Telangana.
According to the media report dated 14-05-2025, the victim, who was experiencing marital issues, was taken to the police station for counseling. After the session, he was taken to a room where the police officers assaulted him with rubber belts. About an hour later, upon leaving the station, he began vomiting and collapsed. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
The NHRC observed that if the contents of the press release regarding assault of the victim by police were true, it raised a serious issue of human rights violations. Therefore, it issued notices to the Director General of Police, Telangana, calling for a detailed report within two weeks.
