National Human Rights Commission: On 02-06-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (‘NHRC’) took suo motu cognizance of the reported protest by residents of the Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, over the proposed construction of a dam. The protest reportedly stems from concerns regarding potential displacement, as well as the adverse impact on the region’s livelihood and ecology.
According to the press release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), this action was taken after the NHRC came across a media report dated 23-05-2025 about a protest led by a human rights activist and Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum in Beging village. It was further reported that approximately 400 people participated in this protest and in response to the protests, the State deployed Central Armed Forces in various areas of the Siang district to maintain law and order.
The NHRC, while taking cognizance, said that if the contents of the media report were true, serious issues of human rights violations may arise. Consequently, it issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Arunachal Pradesh, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
