Plastic waste cannot be easily recycled or safely destroyed. It causes waste management problems because of its long natural life; it chokes waterbodies and the drainage system, accumulating garbage in public places.
The Supreme Court had directed the High Court to pass suitable orders for the State for the identification, preservation, and maintenance of these waterbodies in accordance with the resolution taken in the Ramsar Convention.
“Only in cases of gross failure of the administrative machinery causing injury to the public at large who are unable to obtain any redress except with the intervention of the Court, should the Court intervene and this dividing line should be strictly maintained.”
