Call for Participation | Green Horizon Model United Nations (GHMUN) 2026 | “Ecocide in the Theatre of War: Law, Accountability & the Dying Planet”

Green Horizon MUN 2026

Organized by: Faculty of Law, Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ)

Date: April 3, 2026 (Friday)

Format: One-Day Intensive Conference

Target Audience: Law Students, International Relations Enthusiasts, Aspiring Diplomats, and Young Policy Researchers

📌 About the Theme: Why This Matters Now

In the modern era, the collateral damage of armed conflict extends far beyond human casualties; it leaves behind a scorched, poisoned, and uninhabitable planet. From the destruction of marine ecosystems to the weaponization of natural resources, environmental degradation—or Ecocide—has become a silent casualty of war.

GHMUN 2026 provides a cutting-edge academic platform to examine whether the current international legal architecture is equipped to hold state and non-state actors accountable. Delegates will move beyond traditional rhetoric to analyze hard-law mechanisms, treaty compliance, and the future of international environmental jurisprudence.

🏛️ The Committees & Detailed Agendas

GHMUN 2026 will simulate three specialized organs of the United Nations. Delegates are expected to apply international legal instruments such as the Rome Statute, UNCLOS, the Geneva Conventions, and the Paris Agreement.

1. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)

Focus: Global Norm-Setting and Treaty Frameworks

Thematic Agenda: Developing a multilateral legal framework to recognize “Ecocide” as a fifth crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Key Discussion Points: Sovereignty vs. global environmental obligations, defining environmental damage thresholds, and the role of the International Law Commission (ILC).

2. United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

Focus: Geopolitics, Peace, and Enforcement

Thematic Agenda: Addressing environmental warfare and the weaponization of natural resources in active conflict zones.

Key Discussion Points: Assessing environmental destruction as a threat to international peace and security, economic sanctions for environmental war crimes, and peacekeeping mandates for ecological restoration.

3. United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)

Focus: Humanitarian Impact and Human Rights Jurisprudence

Thematic Agenda: Protecting the human right to a healthy environment in war-torn regions and addressing the crisis of climate/environmental refugees.

Key Discussion Points: State accountability for long-term health hazards (toxic waste, chemical remnants), the rights of indigenous populations in conflict zones, and the legal status of climate displaced persons.

🎓 What Delegates Will Gain

Practical Legal Application: Draft resolutions, working papers, and legal briefs utilizing actual international conventions.

Skills Development: Enhance advanced legal research, diplomatic negotiation, consensus-building, and persuasive public speaking.

Networking: Connect with law students, legal scholars, and policy enthusiasts from across the country.

Recognition: Certificates of Participation, and Merit Awards (Best Delegate, High Commendation, Best Researcher, etc.).
