pendency of cases before Supreme Court

Supreme Court: In a notable move towards judicial transparency and ensuring judicial efficiency, on 13-10-2025, the designated Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the Supreme Court of India, while answering a RTI query regarding pendency of cases before Supreme Court of India, responded with the data on pendency and disposal of cases under 4 categories.

On 20-9-2025, query under Right to Information Act, 2005, was filed by the advocate and activist Y. Balachander Reddy seeking information on total number of “Habeas Corpus Cases” pending for adjudication before Supreme Court of India and total number of disposed of Habeas Corpus Cases. The RTI query further sought information on pending bail petitions under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 (UAPA); Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 (NDPS Act) and statistical information of total number of suo-moto Public Interest Litigation Cases registered by Supreme Court of India and pending before the Court commencing from 01-01-2023 till date of disposal of RTI petition.

The Additional Registrar of the Supreme Court who is also the designated CPIO, answered the RTI query under the following categories:

Habeas Corpus & Preventive Detention Cases [Data from 1-6-2021 to 26-9-2025]

  • Pending Cases: 113

  • Disposed Cases: 526

Bail Petitions under UAPA and other related legislations such as POTA, National Security Act, COFEPOSA and TADA [Data from 01-01-2024 to 25-09-2025]

  • Pending Petitions: 76

The afore-stated number was given as per the data available in Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS).

Pending Bail Petitions under NDPS Act [Data from 01-01-2024 to 25-09-2025]

  • Pending Petitions: 273

The afore-stated number was also given as per the data available in Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS).

Suo Motu Writ Petitions (Civil & Criminal)

  • Answering the query on pending and disposed of suo motu writ petitions, the RTI reply stated that this data can be accessed from the National Judicial Data Grid1.
