As part of the week-long Foundation Day celebrations, Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice Chancellor, hosted a thought-provoking cinematic evening on disability awareness. The event, organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies (CHRDS), featured a screening of the recently released film, which underscores themes of resilience, inclusivity, and the recognition of the potential of individuals with disabilities.
The session commenced with an insightful introduction by one of the students of the Centre, who highlighted the role of cinema as a transformative tool for fostering societal awareness about disability rights and the lived experiences of persons with disabilities. The film, centered around a basketball team of children with disabilities and their coach captivated the audience and ignited meaningful conversations about the intersection of sports, disability, and empowerment.
Following the screening, an engaging discussion was led by members of CHRDS, with participants reflecting on the pressing need for inclusive opportunities and the importance of equal recognition in all spheres of life. The session was graced by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice Chancellor of HPNLU, and Dr. Sachin Sharma, Associate Professor of Law and Director of CHRDS.
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of CHRDS’s commitment to promoting awareness, empathy, and inclusivity through creative platforms like cinema, in addition to its academic and advocacy efforts. The cinematic evening served as a powerful reminder that dignity, equality, and opportunity are fundamental rights that must be ensured for all, irrespective of ability.
