Justice Shree Chandrashekhar appointed as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court
On 25-8-2025, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI B.R. Gavai, recommended the name of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

“Applying the functionality test, we do not find that Air India Ltd., is discharging any public function. Its status is that of a private company, established with sole commercial object of making profit.”
Appointments for Acting Chief Justices for Bombay and Patna High Courts were made in consequence of their Chief Justices being elevated to the Supreme Court.
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar’s parent High Court is Jharkhand High Court. He was thereafter transferred to Rajasthan High Court and then to Bombay High Court,
“It is not for the Court, while exercising extraordinary jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, to decide which site would be more suitable for setting up the sewage treatment plant. This necessarily has to be done by the Government and its Authorities.”
“As per the rules the appellant was entitled for appointment in the subject of Social Science and therefore, she cannot be posted at a place where she is forced to teach a subject qua which she is not qualified.”
The Court cautioned respondent 4 (Principal Secretary, Law and Legal Affairs Department) to remain “alive to his duty” to file a proper and complete affidavit.
The Court noted that although courts generally refrain from interfering in government policy, they are constitutionally obligated to intervene when such decisions infringe upon rights like access to justice or fair trial.
“A government employee cannot claim promotion as a matter of right and he can only be considered for promotion according to the extant Rules.”
“There is no fundamental right of a person to have a live-in relationship with a woman legally married to another man and, more particularly, when the woman appears to be his own sister.”
The Court opined that the impugned orders resulted in a situation where the Department has been forced to continue with two employees on the same post and this situation cannot be permitted to be continued.

The Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice Chandrashekhar from Jharkhand High Court to Rajasthan High Court.
