The Centre for Constitution and Public Policy, University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, commemorated the 77th Republic Day by organizing a Special Lecture titled “Republic Day Reflections: Why Constitution Matters?” on 27th January 2026 at the Moot Court Hall, UILS. The Event was graced with the esteemed presence of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, as well as Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala

The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Prof. (Dr.) Shruti Bedi, Director, UILS, who highlighted the significance of Republic Day as a reminder of India’s constitutional values and democratic ethos. The Director emphasized the responsibility of legal institutions in nurturing constitutional consciousness among students and reaffirmed UILS’s commitment to promoting constitutional literacy and academic discourse. Thereafter, Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala, delivered an insightful address on the Constitution of India as the supreme document governing the nation. He underscored the importance of the opening words of the Preamble, “We, the People of India,” stressing that sovereignty ultimately lies in the hands of the people. Subsequently, Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, addressed the gathering and described the Constitution as a guiding light at the end of a dark tunnel, ensuring rights and dignity to every citizen.
The event was hosted and led by Faculty Co-ordinator Dr. Nidhi Sharma, who gracefully moderated the event and delivered the vote of thanks. It was organised by students led by Tej Partap Singh Gill, the Event Co-ordinator for the day, along with the Organising Heads: Jasmine, Akshita, Nipun Suri (Department Representative), Jahnvi, Piyush Dudeja, Alvira Chadha
