Hallmarking Unique Identification for silver jewelry

On 4-9-2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (‘BIS’) introduced Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID)– based hallmarking for silver jewelry and articles on a voluntary basis with effect from 1-9-2025 to help consumers ensure the purity of metal while purchasing.

All you need to know about hallmarking of silver jewelry:

  1. It was introduced in October 2005.

  2. The jewelers selling silver jewelry were granted certificate of registration in accordance with IS 2112.

  3. The publication of IS 2112:2025 replaced the earlier version of IS 2112:2014.

Effects of revision:

  1. The revision has introduced Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) enhancing traceability.

  2. The revision also aligns with hallmarking of gold jewelry.

  3. BIS Care App has been introduced containing the following details which will enable the consumers to identify:

    • Article type;

    • Purity Grade;

    • Fineness of articles;

    • Date of Hallmarking (First point of sale);

    • Assaying and Hallmarking Centres’s details;

    • Jeweler’s Registration number.

    3. Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) Code

  5. Currently India has 230 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres which are recognized by Bureau of Indian Standards for testing of silver jewelry.

The new Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID)– based hallmarking for silver jewelry and articles therefore strengthens the consumer rights and safeguard consumers against any malpractices.
