If the latest recommendations are approved by the Centre, this will not only bring the number of closer to the sanctioned strength of 38 Judges, but it will also increase the number of women Judges in the Bench.
The new appointments were notified for 4 High Courts namely, Delhi High Court, J&K and Ladakh High Court, Jharkhand High Court and Karnataka High Court.
On 10 September 2026, the Collegium made the appointment recommendations for 4 High Courts namely, Delhi, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and Karnataka.
Significantly, three out of the nine new appointee Judges are women advocates whose names were recommended by the SC Collegium in May 2026.
On 22 May 2026, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Meenakshi M. Rai’s name for appointment as Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
The Collegium recommendations were declared on 27 May 2026 following Collegium meetings held on 22 and 27 May 2026.
Justice Meenakshi M. Rai who is currently serving as Judge of Sikkim High Court, holds the distinction of being the first woman from the State to be elevated to Sikkim High Court Bench.
The Collegium led by CJI Surya Kant recommended 13 names out of which 4 women were also recommended for judgeship.
Justice Lisa Gill was transferred from Punjab and Haryana High Court to Andhra Pradesh High Court on 6 March 2026.
Justice B. V Nagarathna who is currently serving as a Judge of Supreme Court of India, formerly served as a Judge of Karnataka High Court until her elevation to the Supreme Court. Justice Nagarathna is also the potential contender for the first ever woman Chief Justice of India.

Collegium of Kerala High Court unanimously recommended Justice Sudha’s name which was duly approved by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Becoming only the second woman to hold the post of Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, Justice Sunita Agarwal is currently the only woman Chief Justice of a High Court, as presently there is no woman among the Chief Justices of the High Courts of India.
Collegium in its Resolution dated 12-07-2023 recommended names of 15 Judges who are to appointed Permanent Judges in their respective High Courts. 3 out of the 15 recommended names are women Judges.
