Climate Justice Education

Write-up About the Program:

The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance, and Society (VVI), the Faculty of Law at Leiden University, the School of Law at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, and the Jusfocus Research Institute, Leiden, The Netherlands have come together to organise the International Workshop on Climate Justice Education in Law Schools — a policy-oriented workshop focusing on integrating climate justice into legal education. The workshop will be held online and is scheduled for the 30th and 31st of January 2024 and marks the first phase of a multi-phase project. Participating law schools may be considered for involvement in subsequent phases, subject to certain conditions.

Key Objectives:

  • Assessing the current state of climate justice education in Indian law schools.

  • Sharing best practices for incorporating climate justice into legal curriculums.

  • Encouraging collaboration among law schools to promote climate justice initiatives.

  • Empowering participants with resources for developing climate justice curricula and research programs.

  • Identifying potential collaborators from participating law schools for future project phases.

Workshop Activities:

  1. Common Session: Introduction to the workshop’s concept, discussing themes like Climate Justice and the Legal Landscape, the Role of Law Schools in combating Climate Justice, and emerging practices in the Climate Change Law Curriculum.

  2. Parallel Session: Features four sessions with selected delegates presenting papers or proposals on various themes, including Climate Justice in Legal Education, Innovative Teaching Approaches, Legal Strategies for Climate Litigation and Advocacy, and Curriculum Integration of Climate Change Laws.

  3. Panel Session: A consolidation of inputs from the parallel sessions, followed by a discussion led by a panel of international experts, aiming to formulate a policy framework.

Participation Details:

  • The workshop invites submissions of abstracts, with a word limit of 500 words, focusing on methodology and outcomes by 5th January 2024. Each institution can send upto 3 delegations (2-3 members with mandatory one faculty member).

  • The status of acceptance shall be communicated by 7th January 2024

  • The last date for registration for the event, along with payment of the fee (Rs. 3000/- per delegation), is 12th January 2024, and the full paper shall be submitted by 27th January 2024

  • The top 20 papers will be selected for presentation and discussion.

  • Participants will receive certificates of appreciation.

  • The registration fee is Rs. 3000/- per delegation, and each institution can send up to three delegations.
