Supreme Court: On 6-6-2025, the Division Bench of Prashant Kumar Mishra and A.G. Masih, JJ., allowed the application filed by the National Board of Examination (NBE) seeking time extension to hold National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Postgraduate) (NEET-PG 2025), thereby permitting the NBE to hold the examination on 3-8-2025 in a single shift
In a previous order dated 30-5-2025, the 3- Judge Bench of Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NV Anjaria, JJ. directed the National Board of Examination (NBE) to hold National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Postgraduate) (NEET-PG 2025) in one shift. The Court dealt with the question of holding the examination in two shifts or in a single shift. The Court noted that the NBE took two grounds in support of holding the examination in two shifts. First, that the number of candidates who would appear in the said examination are too large, making it difficult for the examining body to identify sufficient number of secure centres to hold the examination in one shift, and the second is that, if the examination is held in one shift, unscrupulous elements may get involved and there could be malpractices. Considering that the exam at that point was scheduled to be held on 15-06-2025, the Court had said that there was two weeks’ time for NBE to identify more centres to hold the examination in one shift.
Pursuant to the afore-stated order, the NBE filed an application seeking extension of time, saying that it needs to increase the number of centres by two-fold and even according to NBE’s technology partner TCS, August 3 was the nearest available date to conduct NEET.
