Governor of Massachusetts approves the Crown Act

CROWN ACT which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair. The Act was initiated to prohibit discrimination on the basis of ones hair texture and the way they style their hair. On July 26, the Governor of Massachusetts signed the Act by making it a law that will now restrict the discrimination on the basis of hair texture and style.

Purpose of the Law:

African Americans are discriminated against on the basis of their skin colour and also on the basis of their hair texture. Black students are deprived of their studies and are not treated equally because of their native hair styles. Before February 2021, US Army had grooming policies which restricted hairstyles like braids, cornrows, bunto knots etc. the capabilities of the black people were judged on the basis of their hair texture and hair style due to which they suffer harmful discrimination and biasness at workplace, school, army and various institutional and employement sectors.

Key points:

  • This Act promotes equality on the basis of hair texture and allows everyone to style their hair according to their will. It uplifts the restrictions and allows black people to maintain their native hairstyle at school, workplace or any public place. This Act also provide remedies that is suffered due to the discrimination over hair colour and hairs style.

  • Under section 3 of the Act, no individual would be discriminated on the basis of their hair colour and hair texture under any federal assisted programs.

  • According to section 4 of the Act, no person in United States will be discriminated on the basis of their hair colour and hair texture to receive any kind of housing assistance and benefits.

  • Section 6 states that the capabilities of any individual will not be judged on the basis of their hair colour and the way they carry their hair. There should not be any kind of unlawful employment practices on the basis of hair colour and its texture.
