7/10: Women Dominate High Court Appointments as SC Collegium Clears 10 Names

7 Women Judges recommended

On 14 April 2026, in a significant step towards greater gender representation on the Bench, the Supreme Court Collegium, approved the proposal of appointment of 10 judges across 4 High Courts, of whom 7 are women.

  • For the High Court of Kerala, the Collegium approved the proposal of elevation of two advocates as judges, namely, Smt. Preeta Aravindan Krishnamma and Smt. Liz Mathew Anthraper.

  • The Collegium also cleared the proposal of appointment of three judicial officers as judges of the High Court of Karnataka. These include Smt. Rajeshwari Narayana Hegde and Smt. Kedambadi Ganesh Shanthi, along with Shri Mahadevappa Brungesh.

  • In the High Court for the State of Telangana, four Additional Judges have been approved for appointment as Permanent Judges. These include Justice Yara Renuka, Justice Nandikonda Narsing Rao, Justice E. Tirumala Devi, and Justice B.R. Madhusudhan Rao.

  • Further, the Collegium approved the proposal for appointment of Smt. Justice Manjusha Ajay Deshpande, Additional Judge, as a Permanent Judge of the High Court of Bombay.

With women accounting for 7 out of the 10 appointments, the latest set of approvals underlines continued efforts to improve gender diversity in constitutional courts, even as representation remains an evolving process within the higher judiciary.
