Karnataka High Court: In a petition filed by Ranveer Singh, an actor, under Section 528, Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) seeking to set aside the order passed by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in case pertaining to mimicry of actor Rishab Shetty from his film “Kantara” depicting the Daiva possession scene, a Single Judge Bench of M. Nagaprasanna, J., closed the proceedings against him considering that he tendered apology and directed him to visit Shri Chamundeshwari Temple within 4 weeks.
On 28 November 2025, Ranveer Singh was invited upon the stage during the closing ceremony of 56th IFFI Festival to promote his upcoming movie “Dhurandhar”. In his speech, while appreciating the performance of Rishab Shetty, he mimicked his performance in the movie “Kantara”, depicting the Daiva possession scene. This led to severe resentment and registration of a complaint for offences punishable under Sections 196, 299 and 302, Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS).
On 23 January 2026, the police filed a report before the Magistrate, and the Magistrate referred the matter for investigation.
As per the direction of the Court, Ranveer Singh filed an affidavit of apology, expressly stating that he would be visiting the temple of the deity in Mysuru, that is, Shri Chamundeshwari Temple.
The respondent, while being satisfied with the regret expressed, objected to the said affidavit on the sole ground that there was no timeline fixed as to when he would visit the deity.
Considering that Ranveer Singh tendered apology and that he would visit the temple, the Court took the affidavit on record and closed the proceedings against him for the said offences with the condition that he would visit the temple within 4 weeks.
Further, the Court cautioned that any such act by Ranveer Singh in future would be taken seriously.
