Permission for election yatras in Lok Sabha elections

Supreme Court: While hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by activists Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey, against the blanket imposition of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (‘CrPC’), the Division Bench comprising of BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, JJ. issued notice and directed that the applications for the permission to conduct such processions and meetings to educate the general public about elections, should be decided by the State authorities within a time period of three days.

A blanket order for imposition of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (‘CrPC’) was passed by the Election Commission, prohibiting all assemblies, meetings, demonstrations, etc. amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha/Vidhan Sabha elections.
